SEO for Dallas Businesses

Here is the thing most agencies will not tell a Dallas business owner in the first meeting. You are probably not going to rank for “Dallas” plus your service, and chasing it is how a lot of good companies waste two years of marketing budget.

Dallas is 1.3 million people, the ninth largest city in the country, sitting inside a metro of eight and a half million. Eleven Fortune 500 companies are headquartered inside the city limits, AT&T and Southwest Airlines and Texas Instruments among them. The agencies competing for broad Dallas terms have been at it for fifteen years with budgets that would fund your entire operation.

That is not a reason to skip search. It is a reason to compete somewhere you can actually win.

Dallas is not one market, it is thirty

Nobody who lives here says they are from Dallas when they are talking to another local. They say Lakewood, Oak Cliff, Uptown, Preston Hollow, Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts, Casa Linda, Lower Greenville, Design District, Far North Dallas. Those are not neighborhoods in the decorative sense. They are separate economies with different incomes, different demographics and different search behavior.

Google understands this better than most marketers do. Local results are heavily distance weighted, which means a business in Oak Cliff competing for a citywide term is fighting the whole city, while the same business competing for its actual trade area is fighting a handful of people.

Practically, that means the winning structure for most Dallas businesses is a strong core site plus genuine location depth for the neighborhoods you truly serve. Not thin doorway pages with the name swapped, which Google has been penalizing for years. Real pages that demonstrate you know the area.

The visitor economy is enormous and specific

Dallas takes in roughly 25 million visitors a year and ranks as the third most popular business travel destination in the United States. The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center is in the middle of a multibillion dollar rebuild that will bring larger conventions still.

Convention and business travelers search in a tight, predictable pattern. Food within walking distance of a hotel. Barber before a client dinner. Urgent care. Dry cleaner with same day service. Somewhere to take a group of eight on a Wednesday. They are not price sensitive, they decide in seconds, and they are gone in three days.

If you are downtown, in Deep Ellum, in Victory Park or near Fair Park, this traffic is worth building for deliberately. The tools are your Google Business Profile, current photography, accurate hours, and content that names the landmarks people are actually standing next to.

Neighborhood commerce works differently

Then there is the other Dallas, the one where a Bishop Arts boutique or a Lakewood dentist lives on a trade area a few miles wide. Here the entire game is the map pack, and the map pack is won on proximity, prominence and relevance.

You cannot change proximity. You can absolutely change the other two. Most independent Dallas businesses we audit have never set their categories correctly, have photos from four years ago, have never responded to a review and have a website that takes five seconds to load on a phone. Fixing those four things moves rankings more reliably than any clever tactic.

The competition is smarter here, which cuts both ways

Dallas has more sophisticated marketers than the suburbs. It also has an enormous amount of low quality SEO work being sold to small businesses, because the market is big enough to support a lot of bad actors. We regularly take over accounts where the previous provider built spam links, created duplicate location pages or stuffed keywords into a footer, all of which now need to be undone before anything can improve.

If you have worked with an agency before and results went backwards, that is worth investigating before you spend anything on new work. Sometimes the first job is cleanup.

How we approach a Dallas engagement

  1. Define the real trade area. Which neighborhoods actually produce your revenue, based on your own customer data rather than aspiration.
  2. Audit for damage. Penalties, toxic links, duplicate listings, cannibalizing pages. In Dallas this step finds something more often than not.
  3. Technical foundation. Speed, mobile, schema, crawlability, internal linking.
  4. Profile and map pack work. Usually the fastest revenue in the engagement.
  5. Neighborhood and service depth. Built to be genuinely useful, because the thin version does not work anymore and has not for a long time.

What we will not promise

We will not promise first place for a competitive Dallas head term on a small budget. We will not promise results in thirty days. We will not buy links, and if a competitor of yours is ranking through purchased links we will tell you that too, along with an honest read on how long that usually lasts.

What we will do is tell you, before you spend anything, whether your category and budget can realistically compete in the areas you care about. Sometimes the answer is that you should spend on your Google Business Profile and paid search for six months and revisit. We have given that advice more than once.

Based nearby, and available in person

Avant Dallas SEO works out of Frisco and serves businesses across the city. We meet clients in person in Dallas, which for a business with a physical location is genuinely useful, because half of what we need to know comes from seeing where you are and who walks past.

Read about what we do and what it costs. We also work in Fort Worth, Carrollton and Plano.
